With a wealth of driving experience, mature drivers are likely to be more tolerant and confident, which can mean they're safer on the road than other age groups. Yet, as we get older subtle changes occur to our sight, hearing and reaction times which may go unnoticed. As driving is also more complex and demanding than it used to be, with more traffic on the road and changes to road signage and markings, it is important to adapt driving habits as you age to help you to stay safe on the roads for many years to come. An older person’s risk of being killed or suffering a serious injury as a result of a collision on the road (as any type of road user) is between two and five times greater than that of a younger person because of their increased physical frailty (Source: Older Drivers: A Literature Review, No.25, (Department for Transport, 2001). Learn to be a more mature driver. The link below is a piece Dorset Safety Camera Partnership have produced for the Bournemouth Self-Care Guide. It has helpful tips on how to drive safely and things to consider when driving. |
