Driving a car has become a very ordinary aspect of our lives and people who have been driving for a while think of it as second nature. However, driving is the most dangerous activity that most people do. The facts · 2,946 people were killed on Britain’s roads in 2007 (Source: Road Casualties in Great Britain 2007, Department for Transport, 2008) · That’s almost nine people every day who suffer a sudden, violent death · Half the people who die on roads (1,612) are in cars (Source: Brake) · A further 30,720 people were seriously injured in road crashes in 2007 (Source: Road Casualties in Great Britain 2007, Department for Transport, 2008) That’s more than 70 people every day suffering injuries which include brain damage, paralysis, loss of limbs, severe burning or facial disfigurement - injuries that can change lives forever. Driving too fast for the road and weather conditions, overtaking blind, driving too close to the vehicle ahead and other types of dangerous manoeuvre cause many of these fatalities and serious injuries Collisions on the road are preventable - even in bad weather or poor light conditions; drivers can stay safe by driving slowly and cautiously. |
