1. A vehicle passes a camera at a speed that is in excess of the limit and the camera is activated.   2. The film is developed by the Police photography department.

3. The film is read to verify an offence has been committed.   4. The details of the verified offence is passed to the Central Ticket Office (CTO) and the registered keepers details are obtained from the Police National Computer (PNC).

5. The registered keeper is sent a fixed penalty notice, outlining the details of the alleged offence and a requirement is made to name the driver at the time of the alleged offence.   6. Once the driver of the vehicle at the time of the alleged offence has been established a fixed penalty notice (£60 fine plus licence endorsed with 3 penalty points) is initially offered (where possible*) which is an out of court settlement. The driver does have the option of requesting a Court hearing and in this case a summons will be issued.

If a fixed penalty option is accepted, the driver sends their driving licence and fine together with signed paperwork. The licence is then endorsed and returned to the driver by post.
